One of Copacabana's few decent handicraft stores, Arte Brasilis sells colorful wall hangings, wooden carvings, place settings and other handmade objects from Minas Gerais and the northeast. There are better places to shop for souvenirs, but this one is convenient if you're based in Copacabana.

Inside the grounds of the Museu do Índio, Artíndia sells a variety of indigenous handicrafts - masks, musical instruments, toys, pots, baskets and weapons. Regional artists, mostly from northern tribes, craft objects using native materials like straw, clay, wood and feathers.

Babilônia Feira Hype
A young crowd mills through the many clothing, sunglasses and jewelry stalls here on weekends. Often there are live bands and dance performances here, and there are places to get your fortune read by místicos or receive a henna tattoo. Plenty of food stalls (mostly selling fried sausages and beer) litter the fairgrounds.

Empório Brasil
Hidden in the back of a small shopping center, Empório Brasil has a small, attractive collection of regional handicrafts, as well as incense and beauty products showcasing the fruits of the Amazon. The store also offers massage and other treatments.

This small Ipanema shop sells some beautifully made art pieces. You'll find works in colored glass, wooden boxes, paintings and some intriguing papier-mâché objets d'art. Nearly everything here comes from Brazil (Minas and Recife in particular). Worldwide shipping available for bigger pieces.

O Sol
O Sol is run by Leste-Um, a nonprofit social-welfare organization. This delightful store displays the works of regional artists and sells Brazilian folk art in clay, wood and porcelain. It also sells baskets and woven rugs.

Complete with ruby-red heels and a yellow-brick road of sorts, Oz is a playful send-up of the old Dorothy story. T-shirts are the specialty here and, not surprisingly, come in whimsical designs that work for both the club and the beach.
