The old colonial edifice features an excellent selection of antiques - from tables and chairs to chandeliers and glassware. Discerning collectors will want to give the shop a good look over before proceeding to the other antique stores lining Lavradio.

Arquitetura & Decoracão
One of Rua do Lavradio's most magical antique shops, with a small assortment of antiques ranging from heavy 1930s pieces to sleek, trim designs from the 1960s. Unfortunately, most of what's for sale is furniture, and you may have difficulty squeezing the Oscar Niemeyer poltrona (armchair) into your suitcase. Sharing the space is a small art gallery.

Brechó Arte 70
Brechó Arte 70 features several racks of secondhand clothes as well as the occasional antique from time to time. Depending on your luck, you can come across some good finds here. Brechós, incidentally, are secondhand stores, which come and go in this neighborhood.

Do Seculo Passado
One of Lavradio's biggest antique shops, this place is packed with glass- and dishware, furniture, iron kettles, lamps, oil paintings and a wide variety of other displays that make for a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Escada
One step inside this rambling antique shop, and you'll just know there's some treasure hidden within. The only problem is that it may not fit in your suitcase. Chandeliers, papier-mâché sculptures, along with antique rings, rugs, little statues and countless other objects litter the interior of this store. Peer beneath the dust and you might find a gem.

Jeito Brasileiro
Next to the Corcovado train terminal in Cosme Velho, Jeito Brasileiro has a wide selection of handicrafts from all over the country, including folk art made by members of the Camucim tribe.

La Vareda
On the bonde (tram) line near Largo do Guimarães, La Vareda stocks a colorful selection of handicrafts from local artists and artisans. Pottery, furniture, paintings, handmade dolls and tapestries cover the interior of the old store. You can also purchase stationery and prints highlighting historic Santa Teresa.

Maria de Barro
This tiny shop sells a small selection of handcrafted pieces from the northeast of Brazil. Wooden geometric vases with animals such as capybaras carved in the side, tiny clay pots and sculptures in stone are among the simple, art-naïf pieces.

Showcasing the work of talented Brazilian artisans, No Meio do Caminho has two floors full of pottery, vases, ceramics and woodwork. Decorative items here are more akin to art pieces - and are priced accordingly. It will ship anywhere.

Although everything is for sale here, Pé de Boi feels more like an art gallery than a handicrafts shop, owing to the high quality of the wood and ceramic works, and the tapestries, sculptures and weavings. This is perhaps Rio's best place to see one-of-a-kind pieces by artists from Bahia, Amazônia, Minas Gerais and other parts of Brazil.

Bossa nova fans shouldn't miss this store. In addition to its ample CD selection of contemporary and old performers, Toca do Vinícius sells music scores and composition books. Upstairs a tiny museum displays memorabilia of the great songwriter and poet Vinícius de Moraes. Occasional concerts in the afternoon fill this neighborhood with smooth bossa sounds.
