    Favela Hype

Inside the Galeria River, this stylish boutique sells daring youthful fashions for men and women. Founded by the sisters Kananda and Krishna Soaras in Santa Teresa in 2001, Favela Hype incorporates a mix of retro and vintage design in the clothing, accessories and shoes, and the label deserves credit for its socially responsible employment practices.

    Teargas

Daring men’s and women’s fashions are for sale at this innovative store and design studio in Ipanema. Stylized T-shirts (including one bearing the company logo, a gas mask), intricately embroidered button-downs, sleek jackets, pants and jeans are suitable not just for the mass demonstration, but for the posh after-party as well.

    Vale Das Bonecas

Youthful street fashion is the focal point at this small Ipanema boutique. Local designers play with color and material here – not always successfully. But if you’re looking for something a little edgy, the Vale das Bonecas (Valley of the Dolls) is a fine destination.

    Mixed

One of Rio’s premier boutiques, Mixed actually originated in São Paolo. Ipanemans, however, love it as their own. The shoes and platforms, blouses and pants sold here aim to capture the essence of Carioca (resident of Rio) sensuality. And they do it quite well.

    Ipanema.com

Featuring local and international designers, Ipanema.com focuses on men – though it also has women’s wear. A good spot if you need a new look in a hurry for that special night out.
