Capricciosa
Inside this trendy high-end pizzeria, you'll find delicious thin-crust pizzas employing the freshest ingredients. The price is high but so is the quality, and toppings aren't so much tossed onto the curst as they are artfully arranged. There is another branch in Copacabana (2255 2598; Rua Domingos Ferreira 187, Copacabana).

One of the most anticipated restaurant openings of recent years, the lavish Fasano Al Mare opened in 2007 and was hailed an instant success by Rio's media. Hideaway
Aptly named, Hideaway is secreted inside a converted 19th-century house. The all glass ceiling (with lush greenery framing the outside) and minimalist design give a contemporary polish to the place. Although there are better places to eat pizza, Hideaway remains a current favorite for the good vibe - particularly in the small lounge adjoining the restaurant - and the live jazz and MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) nights, which are currently on Tuesday.

Old photos, simple furnishings, hearty dishes and the constant din of conversation have made this trattoria a neighborhood favorite for over 30 years. On chic Rua Garcia D'Ávila (next door to Rio's only Louis Vuitton store), Mil Frutas serves tasty ice cream that showcases fruits from the Amazon and abroad. Jaca (jackfruit), lychee and açaí are among the several dozen varieties - all of which are best enjoyed on the tiny shade-covered patio out front. There's another branch in Jardim Botânico (2511 2550; Rua JJ Seabra).

Risotto, pastas, seafood, quiche and salads are among the options. The 19th-century building is a mix of rustic and modern, with designs and sketches by Oscar Niemeyer adorning the walls.

Osteria Dell'Angolo
Northern Italian cuisine is prepared and served with consummate skill. You'd be hard pressed to find fault with fresh pastas, seafood, and much-lauded risottos - the squid risotto in ink sauce in particular. President Lula, among other notable visitors, once dined in the elegant but understated Osteria.
