Lonely Planet review for Maracanã Football Stadium
For a quasi-psychedelic experience, go to a futebol match at Maracanã at Brazil’s temple to football (soccer). Matches here rate among the most exciting in the world, particularly during a championship game or when local rivals Flamengo, Vasco da Gama, Fluminense or Botafogo go head-to-head.

Futbol -- best way to hang with Brazilians
georgiatraveler recommends this,
If you want to really experience Brazil, go to a football game. That's true in Rio, São Paulo, Belo, whereever. I went to a game in Maracanã, and it was FUN. Not as rowdy as you would think; most Brazilian fans are really pretty mellow unless the game is for some kind of championship. It's fun to watch top athletes doing their thing, listen to the Flamengo fight song (which is really fun to clap along to), munch on Globo, and watch the people horsing around.
One big beverage warning: the Rio city government stopped football hooliganism by banning alcohol sales in Maracanã. The beer in those paper cups is NON-ALCOHOLIC beer. So: Germans, Englishpeople, Australians, Texans -- you've been warned.Good for: Football fans (duh.), Extroverts
Not good for: Beer-drinkers (see review), Fans of other Brazilian sides, People who hate crowds
