Caroline Café
Caroline Café has been a major destination for couples (hint: it's a great date spot) for over 15 years. There are a few outdoor tables but inside is where you'll find most of the action – which here means a sizeable drink menu (including 20 different types of beer) and an assortment of dishes (ostrich burgers, sushi and brunch selections).

Baretto-Londra
Rio's glammiest bar is inside the Hotel Fasano, and offers a vision of decadence matched by few of the city's nightspots. The intimate space, designed by Philippe Starck, has an enchantingly illuminated bar, leather armchairs and divans, and a DJ spinning a world electronica. The crowd is A-list, the drinks are pricey (beer R$16, martinis R$26), and unless you're a model (or have one draped on your arm), prepare for a long wait at the door.

Palaphita Kitch
A great spot for a sundowner, Palaphita Kitch is an open-air, thatched-roof wonderland with rustic bamboo furniture, flickering tiki torches and a peaceful setting on the edge of the lake. This is a popular spot with couples, who come for the creative (and pricey) cocktails and the fine views.

Bar dos Descasados
Inside Hotel Santa Teresa, this stylish bar with outdoor seating has lovely views over the city (looking north). You can enjoy decadent cocktails (including a caipirinha made with tangerines grown on the property) and savory snacks (such as salmon tartare), while pondering the A-list crowd and the intriguing history that surrounds you (the building was once a hotel for the recently divorced, and before that the bar functioned as the slave quarters of a working coffee plantation). The bar is fairly empty during the week but becomes a livelier destination, mostly for couples, on weekends.

Bar d'hotel
The waves crashing on the shore are just part of the background of this texture-rich bar overlooking Ipanema beach. The narrow bar is like a magnet for the style set, who gather in the intimate space to enjoy tropical drinks to the backdrop of sea and ambient electronic music. The adjoining restaurant serves high-end fusion fare (mains around R$60).

Bar do Copa
Inside Copacabana's most recognizable landmark, this poolside bar received a dramatic R$4million makeover in 2009, raising the stakes in the hotelier design game. The ceiling, with its 10,000 points of light, aims to mimic the night sky, while crystal chandeliers, glowing column-sized luminaries and gilded mosaics add a vaguely futuristic element to the spacious lounge. There are live bands and DJs; Palace guests get in free.
