Great place to hike and see nature. But take the jeep.
georgiatraveler recommends this,
What other city has a real tropical rain forest inside the city limits?? Rio does. As if Rio needs one more great place to go. But Tijuca is there, all right. Green, sunny, humid, noisy, fragrant -- just what you would want The Jungle to be. And you get there how? In a plane? No, just by taking the bus. Wow.
My favorite sights in Tijuca: the tropical plants, the butterflies, the Lago, the pretty little Chapel, the ancient Native paths, the waterfall. I even saw a small candomblè shrine on the side of one of those paths -- fascinating.
Fair warning, though: Tijuca is essentially the sides of a few large hills, so IT IS STEEP. I'm a lifelong hiker and runner, so i didn't mind walking so far on foot. If you don't want to work that hard (and why would you? You're on holiday), go ahead and pay for the jeep. Even a mountain bike won't really cut it unless you're in really good shape.Good for: hikers, nature appreciation
