Getting there & away
Barcas SA (www.barcas-sa.com.br) runs daily ferries between Ilha Grande and the mainland ports of Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba. Ferries are sometimes added during high season and the schedule can fluctuate, so it’s wise to confirm locally before departure. The ferry between Angra dos Reis and Abraão (R$6 Monday to Friday, R$15 Saturday to Sunday, 80 minutes) leaves Angra at 3:30pm Monday to Friday and 1:30pm Saturday to Sunday, returning from Abraão at 10am daily. From Mangaratiba, east of Angra along the coast, the ferry (R$5.90 Monday to Friday, R$15 Saturday to Sunday, 80 minutes) leaves for Abraão at 8am daily and 10pm Friday, returning to Mangaratiba at 5:30pm daily. The Barcas ferry also offers nice opportunities to observe fishermen at the docks unloading fish and locals returning from Angra with boxes of supplies.
The regular Barcas SA ferry service is supplemented by smaller tourist boats operated by the Associação de Barqueiros and Ilha Grande Turismo (IGT; 3365 6426; firstname.lastname@example.org). Depending on demand, each company schedules multiple daily departures between Angra dos Reis and Abraão, ranging in price from R$15 to R$20. Check schedules with IGT at their desk inside Angra’s bus station or with the Associação de Barqueiros at their office in Abraão.
