One of several dive operators in the Marina da Glória, Mar do Rio offers two-tank dives (R$120) on Saturday and Sunday, departing at 8:30am and returning at 2:30pm. It also offers night dives twice a month. Less-experienced divers can opt for one of the courses, including a five-day PADI-certified basic course.

Balneário Municipal
The Balneário Municipal is a natural swimming pool on the Rio Formoso with clear water and lots of fish, 7km southeast of town. You can spend the whole day here mingling with locals and have lunch at the kiosks. Macaws also make regular appearances. Grab a moto-taxi to get there (R$7 one way).

Favorite treks include going up Pedra da Gávea – a challenging climb up a steep and rugged trail (three hours up to the summit), with great views over the coast from the top, and Pão de Açúcar. You can also arrange kayaking, diving, river rafting and numerous other adventure sports here.
