The Vargo Titanium Triad XE Alcohol Stove is a dual-fuel (alcohol / fuel tab) stove. The XE was designed for weight-conscious backpackers that recognize the advantages and disadvantages of burning denatured alcohol. Specifically, denatured alcohol does not burn as well in high altitude (generally over 11,000 feet) or very cold temperatures (below 20 degrees F). In these situations burning fuel tabs is recommended. Characteristics of burning alcohol in the XE include intense heat during the priming stage and moderate heat once primed. Once primed the stove is very fuel efficient, using very little alcohol. In general, the XE can be used effectively in any condition, making it a stove that we believe sets a higher standard in ultralight hiking. NOTE: A special windscreen is required! The windscreen will maintain the intensity and efficiency of the flame.

Titanium triad ex alcohol stove
This is my second triad. The first had a unbalanced leg support. It was used on the PCT and it was replaced without any trouble except for the normal mailing expense and delay. It starts easily when properly primed by soaking the outside of the lid of the alcohol container with alcohol. The dual fuel feature using esbit tabs is useful when alcohol runs out. As a UL minimalist, I like the leg support but the upper pot support is too wide for my titanium cup and they should have some shallow tread marks on the inside of the pot support legs to keep smaller cups and pots from sliding down one of the legs and becoming unbalanced. To remedy this, I simply do not open the pot legs all the way. Overall, it fits my cooking style perfectly because I only use it to boil water before adding my dehydrated food. Also, it fits neatly in my (three liquid cups) 3"x3.5" cup/kit with all the other items in my cooking kit for a total weight of 6oz.
