Great for extreme endurance racing and trail running, The North Face Ultra 103 XCR offers the same sort of waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX XCR found in other running shoes, but this shoe has a little more open-cell sandwich mesh material along the upper for potentially better vapor transfer on long runs. For years running shoe manufacturers have mastered the art of waterproofing their trail running shoes, but the real trick is finding a way to keep vapor transfer going as a runner's foot heats up. Even with a waterproof membrane, trail running shoes that offer wide mesh panels often sacrifice essential support for navigating challenging trail terrain. The North Face Ultra 103 XCR features an extensive pattern of side and top open-cell sandwich mesh reinforced with synthetic leather and a special molded TPU lateral medial support system, so you experience an effective balance between essential support and better breathable vapor transfer. Other support refinements include X-2 air cushioning in the heel and fore foot, and a Extended Roll Control medial heel wedge. im on my third pair,
I have been using the same shoe/runner/hiker/ for over a year. I used them as a daily use and on all my hikes. The light weight and durability of them are outstanding. Considering the abuse I have put them through, Mt. Fuji, Bear Mountian, 7 lakes {just a long walk really}, Culvers Gap NJ, to past the bake oven Knob Lean to in PA. The only wear to speak of is a slight detachment of the nose guard from the shoe in one lil spot and a separation of rubber tread from the sole on the third tred down. This has happend with all 2 pairs, considering I use them for daily use as well and day/weekend hikes at least 2 weekends a month. I couldnt ask for anything more. I had to have anohter pair!! Not to mention if you have any issues with athelete's foot, the antimicrob layer ROCKS! Since I have worn these I have not had any occurence.

Great shoe
Purchased these a couple of weeks ago, and have done three short hikes. I live in the mountains of SW Va and regularly hike the AT. These shoes are perfect for the rocky trails that I hike. They are featherweight, sturdy, and provide a great grip on rocky terrain. Once again TNF has produced a winner. Altrec is simply the best online store there is for outdoor gear!

Very pleased
Excellent support on rugged terrain runs, and comfortable enough to wear around each day. A little stiff at the top of the tongue, but once you start running or walking you no longer notice it.

Save Your Money
I've been through 2 pairs of these. The first pair never even made it to the trail before the tread started separating. My replacement pair lasted a little longer before the tread started separating again. I received a refund and bought a pair of Salomons. They are a very comfortable shoe though.
