North Face does the best job on hiking pants.
I generally default to Patagonia products for most of my hiking-related items, but neither Patagonia nor anyone else does as good a job as North Face when it comes to hiking pants and convertible pants. I've worn the equivalent of this model, and other North Face models, on many hiking and hostel trips to Europe, Canada, and the United States, and they've always served me well. I generally prefer models, like this one, that have drawstring closures, but not built-in belts. I prefer to supply my own belt. For those subjecting these pants to the very roughest treatment (climbers or winter hikers, for example), the tougher model with the built-in belt may be a better bet. My one quibble? North Face seems to have downsized the pockets a bit from earlier versions. This is no doubt fashionable when going back-and-forth to class and work, but is not preferred for hiking.
Sizing problem
I currently have NorthFace convertible pants that I am happy with. However, the pair I recently received had a MAJOR sizing problem---Too short. The size I rec'd was 2.5 inches shorter than the what the Sizing Chart indicated. However, Altrec quality control arranged for a return and refund in a professional manner.
