Good bag, but not a true zero
I purchased the North Face Elkhorn after having to return other sleeping bags because of overuse of DWR applications which I am allergic to. I'd like to thank North Face for producing a bag that was free of these chemicals. Without this option, I'd be using blankets. I'd love for the down sleeping bag makers to stop using DWR. It's not exactly healthy or "green". My Elkhorn has now seen around ninety camp days. It is built of quality materials and has a nice look and feel. The zipper is just OK, but that's to be expected at this price level. I'm 6'3, 210 pounds and the Elkhorn long fits me perfectly. It's nice and comfortable at the shoulders. I alos like how fast the bag dries when it gets wet, which is an advantage over down. So what are the negatives? Well, I knew going in that there's no way this is a true zero degree bag--not at this price. My initial use of the bag proved this assumption correct. I'd rank the Elkhorn as a 25 degree bag at best, and that's OK. The bag has seen all kinds of weather in numerous locations ranging from Glacier National Park, Yellowstone NP, the Gallatin National Forest, Redwood NP, Lassen NP, Crater Lake NP, Yosemite NP, Sequoia NP, Grand Teton NP, etc. It's done a terrific job of keeping me warm in tough conditions as long as temps are above 25 degrees. Anything more and I need to toss on another blanket, even if I have full clothing and a knit hat on. This is using layered, closed-cell foam sleeping pads. The other negative is the weight of the bag, but the weight is not a big of a deal as the pack-ability. This is a hard bag to compress. If you're looking for a 25 degree bag with an emphasis on build quality, this is a nice bag. I definitely recommend it and I spend a ton of time in our public lands. The Elkhorn passed the test with flying colors.

First things first. Altrec sent this and another bag immediatly and so it was delivered within 3 days. This is cool when you are waiting. Anyway... The bag is a 0 degree bag. The bag is thick in filll and cut somewhat narrow but very warm and comfy. It is no light weight, but for car camping or overnight backpack trips it will be just fine. and of course fine quality.
