Base layer or only layer
This can be worn as a base layer or by itself, depending on the weather...snug fit, but comfortable. Like other Smartwool tops, it doesn't get stinky, even after a few wears, but holds up well to the washer and even the dryer on low.

Good Quality and Fit
I bought this top to wear as a second layer for winter hiking. It served the purpose well. I bought a size medium which is slightly oversized for me (5' 4" 120lbs) because I wanted room for a base layer underneath it. I would say the fit is true to size. It is soft, not itchy, well constructed and comfortable to move around in. Nice color, too (Aegean Heather). A little on the pricey side, though. Hopefully, it will wear well and last a long time making it a good investment.

Micrweight vs. midweight
tHIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE PURCHASED THE MIDWEIGHT. iN THE PAST I'VE ALWAYS WORN THE MICROWEIGHT AND ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. I NOW, HOWEVER, HAVE TO SAY I PREFER THE MIDWEIGHT. IT'S SO COZY AND WARM - AND WE'VE HAD A REALLY COLD WINTER HERE. I LOVE THE FIT AND STYLE OF THE ZIP TURTLENECK - IT'S GREAT AS A LAYERING PIECE UNDERNEATH A HEAVIER TOP AND LOOKS GOOD ON ITS OWN OVER A TEE.

I've recently discovered Merino wool and I've tried several different brands. The Smartwool midweight is by far one of the best products I've tried! Breathable, temp. regulating, excellent fit, NO ITCH, NO STINK!!! I've already purchased a lightweight for warmer days. Love Smartwool
This is the first Smartwool shirt I have purchased and I love it. The fabric feels nice and it is warm without being bulky. I will definately be buying more Smartwool products in the future.
