Down with a Built-in Shell
I love down- its the best and always will be, but if the weather is threatening, I do not want to risk any of my down garments outside, even if they are water repellant, unless I carry a second piece of kit- a wp shell. So the Solar Fusion fits the bill- 800 fp down and a totally waterproof shell all in one. I've been looking to replace a 22 year old waterproof down parka and I have finally found the one. My old wp down xl parka weighs 1361g. My new Solar Fusion xl weighs only 920g and it's JUST AS WARM. The difference is probably the 800 vs 500-600 fill power. The fit isn't roomy, but it doesn't have to be, because you wont need insulation layers. Admittedly, I haven't worn it in freezing conditions yet, but it kept me warm in the mid-thirties. It is a versatile travel jacket.
