I can't stop buying Salomon trail shoes...
My first Salomon's were the XA Pro 3D, and I've been sold on Salomon's comfort, style, and simple lacing system! I consider the XR Crossmax to be a slightly better trail running shoe than the XA Pro. It is a bit more comfortable and seems to grip the terrain a bit better. Regardless, you will not be disappointed with ANY Salomon trail shoe!
Great Ride
Overall this is a great shoe that provides solid support, flexibility and cushioning in a lightweight shoe. I'm 6'0", 190lbs and Ive been on two trail runs (5 miles each run on some fairly rugged and rocky single-track) since purchasing these shoes and must say that they have been a pleasure to run in. As a heavy runner, I appreciate the excellent cushioning. They have solid foot protection that greatly softens the impact of rocks and gravel. They have solid traction and I have had no problems with the lacing system getting loose. The heel cushioning seems particularly good as I tend to drive my heels into the ground when running down hills. My only criticism of the shoe is that it comes up higher than I like on the outside of my ankles... they just touch the bottom of them so I thought I might get some rubbing/digging on the uphill ankle while on sloped trails. However, it has yet to bother me. I would buy them again as long as I dont start to develop any rubbing on my ankles but Salomon might want to consider lowering the outside of these shoes around the ankle just a bit.
