When the peaks beckon to you in the middle of winter, the Men's Outdoor Research Northwall Mitts are an essential on the pack roster. The durable yet lightweight nylon shell provides rugged defense against sharp tools and the breathable Ventia insert vents easily when you are working hard. Abundant EnduraLoft insulation in the shell keeps your fingers moving while on belay and the Moonlite Pile fleece liner can be removed at camp to dry out in preparation for the next ascent.

Excellent mittens for cold
My experience hiking and snowshoeing is that once I'm warmed up, providing there's no wind, I can use lighter weight mittens or liners. But, until I'm warmed up, or, if there's a lot of wind, or, if the temperature drops below 0 with or without windchill I need something more for my hands. I suffer with Raynaud's syndrome which means if my hands get even a little cold, my (broken) thermostat wants to protect my core by shutting down blood to my extremities, which makes my hands even colder. Once this starts the pain from cold is serious and makes life miserable. I bought these mittens to both prevent this from happening to me and to put on if I let my hands get too cold. I have and use chemical hand warmers which also work quite well but these mittens work better. The fact that the liners are removable makes the mittens even more versatile and easy to keep clean. My high mountaineering days are long over but my guess is these mittens would be excellent for serious cold at elevation as well. I feel comfortable knowing they're in my pack, even if I don't use them on a hike.
Three Great sets of mitts in one!
When I bought these, I though they were just insulated mitts. When they arrived, I was dismayed to find they had a fleece liner, since I usually don't like liners -- extra bulk, and they tend to fall out. BUT... then I took the liners out, and the liners themselves are high-quality, dense, windblock fleece with grip tape on them, so they work great as stand alone mitts... BUT EVEN BETTER, is the outermitts are insulated, with a wrist cinch, and are perfect for most days above zero. The outermitts alone are the perfect glove, made better by the addition of the liner, which keeps you comfortable, and free to move well below -20F. If you like your fingers warm, then you already know that Mitts are better than gloves... and these are the best Mitts out there.
Men's Northwall Mitts
Received the Northwall Mitts yesterday. I examined the mittens and found them to be very comfortable. The mitts fit comfortably well on my hands and were very easy to slide on and off my hands. There is enough room inside so my fingers are not smashed together. Bonus - they are NOT bulky. Only wish they came in different colors.
