More great quailty from Outdoor Research
OR merchandise is always my first choice. Hi-tech, hi-quality. The Habitat jacket is made of plush, warm "fur" which doesn't shed, pill, or end up matted down like "fur" from some of OR's competitors. Considering it's pile - which is thinner and not as warm as Patagonia's R3 high loft fleece - the Habitat is in fact warm and breathalble - not windproof - and so IMO is best when coupled under a hardshell in wintery temps, but can be worn alone in autumnal temps. Also IMO when price is factored in, the Habitat jacket oushines Patagonia's R3. I'm an athletic 6'/200 lbs and I find the fit is true to size, ie regular as opposed to athletic; the sleeves end at the lower wrist; the back is slightly longer than front; the pockets are sized generously and angled down so belongings won't spill out when pockets are unzipped, while the interiors are mesh - I prefer they were "fur"; the exterior of the jacket is a short weave fleece - not "fur" - that seemingly will not deteriorate into that "old towel" look as some fleece does; the zippers are smooth, and the Habitat can accomadate baselayers without becoming a scuba suit. I especially like the weight of this jacket, the indispensable hem draw cords, and the thick neck which is not only a barrier to wind but stands up on its own whether zipped or unzipped. The pockets are glue bonded to the exterior but since I haven't washed my Habitat jacket yet I can't comment on durability. Nonetheless, based on other OR merchandise I have, durability is built into this jacket. Lastly, for those who recoil at the experimental interior colors used in some of OR's jackets, the interior here is classic black. I've used this climbing and around the city and it's a warm winner in both venues!
Great fit, but not as warm as I would expect...
OR's Habitat jacket is an excellent buy. It fits me very nicely; I am very satisfied, especially given the low price. I have to say it is not nearly as warm as I would like. I have owned a number of mid-weight fleece jackets that were thinner/lighter than this one and were much better insulators. Most recently, I had a Marmot jacket that was a wool blend- it was much thinner, but a much better insulator. The exterior is also slightly prone to showing any soiling quickly. Despite these criticisms, I am still very satisfied with it- the jacket has a nice neutral fit on my body type (5'8", 170lbs, size medium), and the pockets are where I like them. The collar stands comfortably against my neck when zipped all the way up. If you seek a jacket to wear regularly as an outer layer on cool days, this is a nice choice. On colder days, I just grab the next jacket over in the closet.
