Versatility, a women's specific fit, and surprisingly large capacity for its weight (only 4 lbs. 9 oz. in medium), the Osprey Women's Ariel 75 backpack is an excellent choice for climbers and backpackers who enjoy multi-day trips but want to keep the weight to a minimum. The recommended capacity of the Osprey Ariel 75 women's backpack is in the neighborhood of 40 lbs. so the suspension and harness need to be solid. Coined the AirScape suspension, it consists of peripheral 7075 AL rods, an internal HDPE framesheet with single aluminum stay and a covering of ventilated nubbed foam and mesh grip. This covering, or backpanel, provides superb contact yet still allows air to circulate. Connecting to the suspension, a women's IsoForm custom moldable hipbelt and IsoForm shoulder harness with dual density foam and Spacer Mesh surface evenly distributes the load. Most women find that the harness and hipbelt that comes with the pack is the correct size for them, but other sizes are available for an exact fit. Regarding the custom molded hipbelt, contact Osprey customer service at 970-564-5900 for molding instruction upon delivery of your pack. An overall key feature of the Osprey Ariel 75 backpack is its versatility. For those monster loads into base camp a stretch woven front pocket offers extra carrying capacity when the main compartment is stuffed. And then for go-light day trips from camp, the top pocket mates with the hipbelt to make a terrific lumbar pack. The Osprey Ariel 75 women's backpack is also Osprey Excessory compatible, meaning a choice of add-ons can be installed to further boost the backpack's versatility and capacity.

Great Pack
Got the new pack for a bigger trip this summer, however, we just went snowshoeing into a yurt and I was able to try it out. It is a very nice pack. Very good fit and great support. We only carried in about 40 lbs but it was quite comfortable. Well designed and appears to be quite sturdy.

Great Pack
Recently I went backpacking in S.America and I decided to swap my old frumpy backpack to a new Osprey pack. Right out of the box it fit my small frame very well. I wound up stuffing my pack to about 65lbs. and surprisingly this pack held up very well and it was super comfortable. After hiking 40 miles or so. I am super happy with this pack. I would recommend it to any small women looking to carry heavy loads.

Great packs, great present.
My two girls are planning a backpacking trip across the North and South Island of New Zealand, then Australia, and finally to Fiji before returning to the US beginning in June. I did a lot of research on the two packs I purchased for Christmas and they meet the bill of fare advertised. A great woman's pack which will be much appreciated after 6 weeks traveling and exploring this summer.

Best All Around Backpack!!
I did a lot of research on womens backpacks, and finally decided on this pack. I wanted an ultralight weight pack that was sturdy and versitile enough to meet my needs. Little did I realize how well this pack fit the bill, and much more. I can't even begin to say how wonderfully designed this pack it. The hip belt is perfect, particularly since you can get a size to fit your body (i.e. different pack size and hip belt size), the whole pack sits well, and if you fit it correctly is hardly noticeable! To top it all off, besides the noticeable bells and whistles (like compression and other innovative designs), the top pocket converts to a hip pack with our pack hip belt, and quite easily. Besides the ease, it connects and cinches in tightly, making this the most comfortable pack I've used in many years allowing for decent day hikes from base camp. There's sufficient space for lightweight packing or short trips, and again, comfortable. Something I personally haven't had in years from a backpack. Many kudo's to the pack designers who thought through their design rather than just throwing it together like so many other companies.

Sizing Chart

Back Measurement Step 1 - Pack Sizing

All Osprey packs, save the transit bags, are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. To find your torso length, have a friend measure your back along the spine from the level of your iliac crest (the top of your hipbones) to your C7 (the knobby bone at the base of your neck).

Step 2 - Hipbelt Sizing

To determine your hipbelt size measure around your hips, not your waist. A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug; after all it will be carrying the bulk of the pack's weight. The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the pads when securely tightened.

ErgoPull ErgoPull

Nearly all Osprey hipbelts use an exclusive ErgoPull design. It creates mechanical advantage to provide extra leverage in cinching down the hipbelt. The ErgoPull design also draws tension along the top and bottom of the belt, not through the center, so it distributes pressure more evenly over the padding and relieves direct pressure on the hipbones.

Harness Step 3 - Harness

Osprey Crescent & Luna, Aether & Ariel and Waypoint packs offer interchangeable shoulder harnesses. Harness sizing usually corresponds to pack size, but your best bet is to try one on. A properly fit harness should terminate 2 to 3" beneath the armpit. Webbing should not touch the body. By breaking the hook and loop connection and sliding the harness up and down the backpanel the torso length can be adjusted up to 3". (see illustration).

Step 4 - Overall Fit

Once you have the correct size pack, harness and hipbelt, and the torso length set properly, it's time to put some weight in the pack (20 to 30 pounds of well distributed weight will do) and dial in the fit. First, snug down the hipbelt and harness. Connect the sternum strap (A) - position it about 2 inches below your collarbones and snug it down lightly. Finally, tighten the load lifter straps to draw the load solidly against your back. The lift straps (B) should come off your shoulders at a 45 to 60 degree angle in Osprey's ReCurve and Ethereal Suspension packs. In other models these straps serve more as compression straps and ride flatter; they may even angle downwards.

In a good fit, there should be no pressure points and no gaps between your body and the pack. With Osprey's ReCurve packs, final tweaking may involve custom fitting the aluminum stays to your back.
