Great Shoes
I bought these to hike the Florida Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. So far they are amazing. No break-in required. They fit amazingly well and are very comfortable. Great water-proofing, been hiking a lot in snow recently. I'll have to wait to see how long it holds up. I like how these shoes aren't trying to be stylish, just functional. I bought these and the Salomon XA Pro 3D Mid GTX - well the Salomons may have a spicy name but they really don't compare to the Montrails, at least for my feet. I returned the Salomons. 5'11 / 180 / size 11

Great Trail-runner / Approach Shoe
I've been a fan of most Montrail products for years. This pair in particular is excellent. I was frustrated that they had discontinued their XCR-Mid, as it is the best approach shoe I have ever owned. I wanted a Mid-cutoff shoe/boot, and this was what I ended up going with (over Salomon and many other options out there.) This is now my go-to shoe for just about anything! Super light weight. Great ankle support. Good lacing system. Breaths very well for being waterproof/goretex. And best of all: no break-in needed AT ALL! It's definitely not a hiking boot, but I have done many 8 - 10 mile day hikes with my daughter in our Deuter Kid-Comfort on my back, and these have supported me well with no pain, blistering or feelings that they didn't support me well enough. This was the best alternative I could find to the XCR-Mid. They aren't meant for rough rock-scrambling, and you wouldn't want to put your toe into a crack and try to stand up on it like you could with the XCR's. However, I am totally confused by prior reviews saying that this isn't water proof. I have submerged the shoe nearly to the top of the boot, and never had any issue. Feet stay nice and dry. The sole is VERY aggressive and grips well, but does wear out rather quickly if you use this for running on pavement/blacktop (This is why I gave the shoe 4 stars rather than 5: I think that the rubber should be a bit harder).

Comfortable but not waterproof
I bought these shoes primarily for walking my dogs every day in the large open space near my house. The trails are mainly graded dirt but they get muddy in the winter. I was able to walk through several inches of standing water and not have get my socks wet but walking through wet grass for only a few minutes resulted in soaked socks and wet feet. The grass was only wet from dew so I'm not sure why my feet ended up so wet. I tried the same shoes in wet grass several more times with the same results. On the plus side, these shoes were extremely comfortable right out of the box and provide excellent support and traction when walking down steep, slippery hillsides.
