Wonderful classy coat.
This coat not only looks great, it feels wonderful and is warm, too. A few years ago I'd only heard people talking about how great Icebreaker stuff is...Finally I got some Icebreaker stuff and all of their stuff is indeed totally awesome. This coat is no exception, it is wonderful.
This is my third winter using this coat and it still looks good as new. These are short Texas winters, and I can tell it'll hold up for years to come and will always be stylish. I still frequently get complements on it. I'm 5'7", 35" bust, with fairly long legs; I take a medium in Icebreaker tops and dresses (I'm obsessed) and this fits TTS with room for moderate layering underneath. It's perfect 3-season coat for Texas and it packs fairly compactly for travel, but when the temp dips below the upper 30s or there's a hard, cold wind, I wear something warmer. The only construction flaw I've encountered (which Icebreaker has hopefully fixed by now) is that the narrow plastic coating along the fabric holding in the zipper began almost immediately to peel and flake near the teeth. This doesn't impact the warmth or appearance at all since the storm flap buttons over the zipper, but it did surprise me.
Great Jacket!
So far, I love my jacket. I just recently purchased it so have not tried it out in colder weather. I am not sure how warm it will be in the winter. But for early spring in the Rockies, it is working great. And I love the look. The only negative so far is that the zipper is sometimes difficult to use, you need to get everything lined up exactly.
not the same
I bought the mayfair in java several years ago. I LOVED the coat's fit and surprising warmth. I always received compliments on it. So...I thought I might get another in a different color. I tried both a large (too loose on top, fit great on bottom) and then a medium (too tight around chest, o.k. on bottom). The new mayfair has shoulder pads, which contributed to the poor fit up top. This coat must be worn fitted; it just looks wrong if it is even a little loose. Material is thicker and nicer in the newer version but the poor fit for my build trumps all. I am 5'10 and 160 pounds. Not much chest but broad shoulders. The coat fits my long arms great! And the length for someone tall with a long torso is great as well. Just too tight around the top. If you have the right build, this is a terrific coat. I'd spend the money without a shrug if this coat fit like the last version.
I regret to inform you...
I had very high hopes for this coat, but feel the Mayfair's overall design did not quite come through. I am a sz small (5'8" 120- 34in) in Icebreaker shirts, but bought a medium to assure being able to wear (if needed) layers of clothing under this coat. It fit me fine across the shoulders and in the arms (not too tight upon bending at the elbow), but was weirdly large elsewhere, and seemed very "A line." The underarm cut is too low and I felt like I had a slightly webbed look when my arms were outstretched. The padded shoulders also seemed conspicuous. I think if I downsized to a small it COULD work, but at full price- I'd be concerned about losing shoulder/arm fit, so it's being returned. Other than this- the great quality, durability, and manufacturing evident in all aspects, as is typical of Icebreaker garments. I really wish it had worked out.
