K2 refers to their all-new EXT ski the "little bro" of their backcountry Extreme, but don't assume it's a beginners-only ski. The narrower dimensions on the EXT and lively pop will still please intermediates and experts who want a snappy and durable all-mountain freestyle ski for pulling tricks wherever they wander--especially on groomed runs and hardpack snow. The EXT has K2's vertical ABS sidewall, which is built to withstand seasons of abuse. Unlike Cap construction, Sidewall designs are built for the enhanced durability that's essential for skis intended for tricks. Vertical sidewall material directly above the ski edges reinforce and support, but what some people don't know is that K2's vertical sidewall enhances power transmission from your legs to the ski edges, resulting in precise handling that many people feel exceed traditional Cap construction. What this all translates to is that the EXT offers more than enough performance for intermediate and advanced all-mountain enthusiasts, but if you're not an aggressive beginner or you need a forgiving entry-level ski, the EXT might feel too twitchy for your tastes. The EXT also has a lively fir wood core that feels more solid than skis with spruce cores, so the ski offers slightly better vibration-dampening characteristics at higher speeds than some of the lighter skis. Wrapped around this fir core is K2's proven and successful Triaxial braided fiberglass. Interlocking fiberglass strands along the core add exceptional torsional rigidity, which helps reinforce the ski while maintaining the natural flex in the fir core. Compared to other K2 offerings, the EXT's keep-it-simple approach might seem void of all the bling and gee-whiz technology, but if you're a back-to-basics purist, the EXT is everything you need--and you'll probably be enjoying this ski's natural flex and superb durability long after the gear geeks have moved along to the next big trend.
