Sucre long enjoyed a reputation as one of Bolivia’s safest towns, but occasionally visitors are harassed by bogus police or ‘fake tourists.’ If you have a problem, report it to the tourist police (648-0467; Plazuela Zudáñez).

You can’t sit down on the plaza without being surrounded by eager shoeshine boys. They are persistent but good-natured; one boliviano is the going rate for a polish.
