Lonely Planet review for El Chorro

A few kilometers upstream from the town, El Chorro is an idyllic beauty spot with a waterfall and pool. You can reach it by boat only; enquire at the harbor. On a rock roughly opposite El Chorro is an ancient serpentine engraving, which was intended as a warning to travelers: whenever the water reached serpent level, the Beni was considered unnavigable.

    Does it actually exist?

    viajera does not recommend this,

When I was in Rurre with friends a few weeks ago, we decided to try and find this el chorro. After getting nothing but blank stairs and shrugs from the men down at the harbor, 'el qué??' they all responded. And no my spanish isn't bad. Anyways we noticed in the Lonely Planet map an arrow pointing the way. We met up with a man mumbling something about a 'toma agua', not being able to ask him to clarify since he hurried off, we kept going. And we kept going some more. Probably a couple of miles on a narrow path between the steep hillside and the river below. More than half the way we followed a huge white tube, crossing over rickety bridges and through creepy tunnels, till it dissapeared in the mountain. It was a beautiful walk and the butterflies we saw made it worth it. But eventually we got to a small clearing with houses near the river. We met up with a park official that told us the waterfall was converted to a water source for the town many years ago. Funny thing is our guidebook was the most recent one.....time to update for real, not just slapping on a new cover this time please. Maybe there's another 'el chorro', but if it exists no one in Rurre knows about it.
