  1. Café Sol y Luna

A low-key, Dutch-run hangout offering cocktails, good coffee but very average meals. It has three cozy levels with a book exchange and an extensive guidebook reference library (many current LP titles), a dart alley and couches downstairs.

  2. Dead Stroke

An upbeat and marginally sleazy billiards bar with cable TV. It attracts lots of night owls with pool, snooker, darts, chess and dominoes, and also serves standard bar meals.

  4. El Calicanto

Housed in an old colonial home two blocks from Plaza Murillo, it consists of the café El Molino, which does coffee and lunches, a bar with a nightly peña, and the Restaurant Las Tres Parrillas (with reasonably priced and excellent food).

  6. La Choperia

Opposite the Mormon church, its rustic interior, retro photographs from the '20s and '30s, Western pop music and pitchers/jugs of beer make it a favorite with middle-class locals.

  7. Oliver's Travels

The worst (or best?) cultural experience in La Paz is to be had at this pub. It claims to offer 'nothing original - just beer, football, curry, typical English food, cheeky banter and lots of music you've heard before'. But luckily for owner Olly himself, crowds of revelers swallow this stuff. It has one of the best book exchanges around.

  8. Ram Jam

If La Paz had a Paris Hilton, she'd be here. This trendy hot spot has the lot: great food and drinks, mood lighting and live music. There are vegetarian options, English breakfasts and microbrewed beer. After exerting yourself on any of these, you can breathe easy on the bar's first floor in Ozone, the most novel oxygen bar in the world.
