La Choperia
Opposite the Mormon church, its rustic interior, retro photographs from the '20s and '30s, Western pop music and pitchers/jugs of beer make it a favorite with middle-class locals.

La Paz's long-standing hip, hot (it gets crowded) and happening spot. Especially popular with expats and NGO workers. On some nights, you can catch Cuban and Colombian performers.

Oliver's Travels
The worst (or best?) cultural experience in La Paz is to be had at this pub. It claims to offer 'nothing original - just beer, football, curry, typical English food, cheeky banter and lots of music you've heard before'. But luckily for owner Olly himself, crowds of revelers swallow this stuff. It has one of the best book exchanges around.

You can sample all sorts of local specialties, including various llama dishes: charque kan, shish kebab and even llama fondue. It show also features Andean dancing. It's also open for lunches but with no show.

If La Paz had a Paris Hilton, she'd be here. This trendy hot spot has the lot: great food and drinks, mood lighting and live music. There are vegetarian options, English breakfasts and microbrewed beer. After exerting yourself on any of these, you can breathe easy on the bar's first floor in Ozone, the most novel oxygen bar in the world.

Teatro Municipal Alberto Saavedra Pérez
The Teatro Municipal Alberto Saavedra Pérez has an ambitious program of folklore shows, folk-music concerts and foreign theatrical presentations. It's a great old restored building with a round auditorium, elaborate balconies and a vast ceiling mural. The newspapers and municipal tourist office have information about what's on here.
