Where's the world's best pizza?

Posted Thursday, August 28, 2008, 4:55 PM by Lonely Planet

I have never been more in love with food than the night I tasted my first slice of pizza from Ray's in Prince St, New York City. It was 3am and the simple, greasy creation - folded in half in true New York style - was poetry. The crust was thin, crunchy and charred to perfection; the mounds of cheese oozed oil. It didn't take long for my passion to become an obsession and soon I was eating it cold for breakfast.

Since pizza is so personal, there will always be debate around which cities or countries produce the best. The battle continues to rage between Chicago and New York, while LA and Berlin are also staking their claim. But for many the home of pizza cannot be beat. So what makes great pizza great?

I have to admit that growing up in Chicago I am horribly biased and don't actually consider that thin stuff from New York the same food. However the best pizza is actually a Chicago-style place in Oakland/Berkeley, California called Zachary's. It combines the idea and form of Chicago with the most amazingly fresh produce from California.

I think the secret for the best pizza is mozzarella of good quality (mozzarella. Not other cheese called mozzarella. You cannot fool people on that :-). Then use olive oil, and bake the pizza in a wood stove.

On yes, an no pineapples on pizza. Someone should ban this ingredient! :-).

There's only one place where you can find the best pizza in the globe. It is Italy. In each restaurant, pizzeria and pub you can eat pizza that is better than New York, Chicago and the each place in USA.

Pizza USA? How you can use this two word in the same phrase???

Bye.

If this pizza in New York is so good as you described, I hope the pizza maker is from Naples and he use quality flour from a little moulin near Gragnano and he use only mozzarella di bufala D.O.P. from Mondragone, and he use just San Marzano tomatoes from Sarno, and exrtavirgin olive oil fron National Park of Cilento and premium biological basil grown under italy's shining sun, all of these obviously baked in a wood stove?
Or the pizzaiolo is from China trained from Pizza-hut using sliced cheddar and tomato from Cile, baking in electric oven?

IMHO, even if it's just a matter of taste, you can't tell which is the world's best pizza before trying the original one in Naples. It's not simply a recipe you can re-create anywhere (like a Big Mac), it's not just a matter of the mozzarella you put or the stove you are using. There's dozens of unpredictable variables, unknown to most of the self-appointed pizzaioli all around the world.

I cannot tell you where the best pizza is, but I can tell you where the worst is: Cuba. On finding myself in Cuba in 2005 with next to no money, I ate street pizza for ten days straight. It has a thick dough base, a smudge of tomato paste, a sprinkling of cheese and some onion if you are lucky.

Having said this, I survived and it was the only thing I could afford, so I am grateful for it.

I am fortunate to have a local pizzeria called Punch that serves Neopolitan pizza with exactly the ingrediants - San Marzano tomatoes, bufala mozzerella and good olive oil and baked in a wood fired oven.

The best way to order is "wet" with extra olive oil and tomatoes. This version is uncut and eaten with a knife and fork just like in Naples.

This pizzeria is an official member is the Associazone Vera Pizza Neopoletana who regulate official Neopolitan Pizza.

YUM. I may have to go there right now!

When I saw the title of this post I instantly thought of Famous Ray's pepperoni pizza I had back in '91. I've been ordering pepperoni ever since and find it difficult to order anything different...just in case...I miss out on something as good.

I have yet to visit Naples but I suspect that they probably know what they are doing to say the least. In the UK we are stuck with the usual chains.

17 years and still nothing quite like Ray's pepperoni.

I just tried Ray's in New York (St. Marks and 3rd) last weekend and have to say that I was very impressed. However the best pizza I found in New York was in Angelo's on Broadway just north of the Ed Sullivan Theatre (Letterman studio). There are great pizza places almost everywhere if you try something besides the big chains. Pizza of Waterton is in Alberta, just over the border from Montana, and awesome. Lots of good pizza can be found in Banff and Canmore, Alberta, too. My favourite pizza of all time was a place called Alfredo's in St. John's Newfoundland, but it burnt down.

Just have to mention that I've been to Italy and tried the pizza there. Didn't like it. Arca in Venice wasn't too bad, though.

I have eaten pizza of New York and Chicago. They are both good. But the latest pizza, I have was in a German restaurant in Gasan, Marinduque, Philippines. It was their seafood pizza filled with shrimps, clams, fish and native crabs..My mouth is still watering when I remember it. It will be the first thing I will order when I return to Marinduque this coming November

The best pizza is made in France.
In Italy, they have a very plain pizza, a thin crust soaking in olive oil, tomato paste, cheese and spices.
In the USA, a pizza is more a "clean-the-kitchen" dish where you can find anything from pinepple to bacon or salami slices, topped with a low-quality mozarella cheese.
The best of all isthe one I prepare for myself : secret recipe !

When I saw the title of this post and living in New York. I had to comment and I couldn't agree more ... Rays Pizza is amazing. Although I am sure Italy's got their own slice of heaven.

All you travelers check out this new travel site I ran across the other day baraaza.com. Its pretty cool.

Athens, Greece has the best pizza I've ever tasted. The variety of cheeses helps, but also the topping, including seafood, are the difference. Generally, I recall thin, but chewey crusts.

Interesting comments, I have been to Italy a few times and agree that the pizza there is quite spectacular. However Ive gotta say the best pizza I have had is at Il Casale, Balmain, Syd Australia, Thin, base lightly covered with a homemade tomato sauce, topped with fresh mozarella and fresh basil....to die for!
I want some NOW!!!

the reason is simple: only in italy you can eat pizza. in the rest of the world you can eat something else that people inappropriately call pizza.
you are just used to something that IS NOT pizza

Although there's a little italy in sydney, nothing beats the pizza from the mother land. I had the best pizza in sicily and naples. There must be something in the water that can't be replicated anywhere else in the world.

The Mediterraneans do it best. I've had fantastic pizza in Monaco, Croatia (Zagreb) and Rome.

Then again, I've had great pizza at home in Brisbane, Australia.

As Pariscrawler said, it's where it is that makes it special - or company, or occasion.

I haven't been to naples where many claim the best pizza in the world lies. I did experience my best pizza ever in Rome though at Dar Poeta, in the Trasteverre area. They make an UNBELIEVABLE pizza (they're all great) and for dessert, the nutella and ricotta cheese calzone- I would walk back to Rome (from Dubai) just to have that again.

The best pizza places in the world are Zachary's Chicago Style Pizza in Berkeley California and Pizza Orgasmica in San Francisco.
There are many interesting places across italy and new york, but nothing quite compares to those two. I haven't been to chicago.

The best pizza is very subjective. I have eaten pizza in NY, Italy (Rome and Venice), Athens, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, New Jersey, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Mexico and many other less known places. The pizza is by no means the same style at any of these places and therefore you cannot compare. I would have to say the Pizza I am most addicted to is at "The Pizza Club" in La Habra (Los Angeles). It is a great family joint with amazing recipes. Copenhagen is a close second with a very Berlin style to their Pizza. I think I will have to go eat Pizza now that I thought so much about it.

I have to judge it on why, and when, I'm eating it. I love Chicago style-heavy on the sauce and loads of toppings, but would never pass up a New York style piece after a long night of bar hopping. The ultimate, however, is a homemade pizza made from all of the right amount of fresh ingredients and baked exactly just the way I like it.
