Great cinemas of the world

One of my favourite things to do when I go to another country is go to the movies. Even if I can't understand the language, seeing (or hearing) how people react to the movies can be entertainment in itself. And then there's the movie houses - my favourites would have to be the floridly magnificent Tuschinski in Amsterdam (it's nick-named the Dowager's Bon-Bon Box), the faded powder-blue Deco elegance of Mumbai's Apollo, and the lavish mish-mash of San Francisco's Castro.
First on my wish list? The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams, the Scottish festival dreamed up by Tilda Swinton and Mark Cousins - eclectic programming, a venue with a peerless pedigree (the Who and Pink Floyd played there) and an entry fee that can be waived for a tray of home-baked fairy cakes.
Food, of course, is an important element of any cinema experience. According to the Thorn Tree, the Ritz in Scranton, Pennsylvania 'give you pickles from a big jar.'
Now that's entertainment.

One of the prettiest I've ever seen is Birmingham's Alabama Theater, www.alabamatheatre.com.
Built in 1927 as "The Showplace of the South," it has been renovated to its former glory. Head to the mezzanine and you feel like you're climbing the main stairway of the Titanic, pre iceberg that is. Best of all: the "Mighty Wurlitzer" organ still plays before movies.
It's open for concerts, plays, and a summer film series ($6). It's enough to make you curse the person who invented the "cineplex."
another thing that's entertaining that has to do (randomly) with traveling: some girl's blog called shotjot.com. she posted something today that's about spain and it's hilarious. you should check it out!
it's a while ago now but remember a beautiful cinema in Jiphur, did'nt look at all impressive from outside... inside, the lobby was something really jaw dropping... first i just thought it was me until i noticed many other westerners snapping away at what i can only describe as heavily influenced Art Deco interior...
