Hitting where it hurts?

Posted Thursday, May 29, 2008, 10:14 PM by Lonely Planet

One of the hottest (but sadly, let's face it, most boring) topics of conversation right now is the price of fuel. One glance at the price boards at the local service station is seriously the cheapest facelift you can get - those eyebrows aren't coming down for a good long while. In light of this rise in fuel prices, some airlines are cutting their services to less popular destinations (or 'low-yeilding leisure routes' as they call them - how'dya like that, Gold Coast? Wow.) Both domestic and international services will be getting their wings clipped.
This is really interesting. Are the days of 10-cent travel over? Is that flurry of budget flights finally coming to rest? How is this going to affect the future of travel? Are we all going to start investigating destinations closer to home or are we just gonna suck up that price hike and awkward schedule?

I'm interested, I'm conflicted, I'm kinda excited. How's this going to pan out? What do you think?

Here in the US, I don't think we'll see any improvement in the price of oil/gas until after the election. This is really hitting the travel industry hard. The cost of fuel and the state of the economy have people afraid to spend their money on travel. We're finding customers are either not vacationing this year or are traveling locally. For those who are not afraid to travel, good deals are available at resorts, www.Discount-All-Inclusive.com offers many resort pecials.

I can't believe you Americans are having a heart attack over $2.50/gallon! Over here in the UK, I'd kill for that! We're paying a good £5 ($10) for a gallon of unleaded. You don't know how good you've got things...

While I agree, ben, that Americans have it easy at the pump when compared to the rest of the world, we're paying $4 per gallon right now, not $2.50. :)

I hope it might open our eyes to other options - overland travel is much more adventurous than yet another flight, another soulless airport... that being said, realities are that certain things are much less feasible without flying and with limited amount of time, so as long as I can afford it, I think the occasional flight is still gonna be part of my travelling future. Maybe fly out and try to make your way back by train/bus/bicycle/ferry/horseback?

I recently
traveled to many countries outside of the U.S. and witnessed firsthand how high the price of gas has risen. If you wish to participate in travel blog about the gas prices in other countries click here http://www.userplane.com/directory/index.cfm?action=domain.home
