Where's the world's best ice cream?

Posted Wednesday, April 23, 2008, 11:48 PM by Lonely Planet

I still hanker for the Hungarian version of the Magnum ice cream that had sour cherry folded through the vanilla, and the guys at Gridskipper have recently been rhapsodising about the classic hot fudge sundae at LA's Twohey's Restaurant. An old friend who travelled in Poland during the late eighties reckoned there was nothing to top their luscious, lavish cones, although I'd back the creamy gianduia I had in a quiet, sunny backstreet of Venice to give them a run for their money.

What makes great ice cream great? Is it fudge-covered peanut butter-filled pretzels in vanilla malt ice cream rippled with fudge and peanut butter US-style abandon or the subtle, one-note pleasure of a bitter lemon gelato? And where's the best ice cream you've ever had?

The best ice cream ever was Ben & Jerry's Rainforest Crunch. Too bad it's been relegated to the graveyard.

The most amazing ice cream i think is from the ice cream shop in Merida, Venezuela.

Its in the record books for having the most flavours in the world, i tried spagetti and cheese and salmon before some strawberry to take the strange taste away.

The likeness to the flavours is quite amazing!

Italy definitely! They even have ice cream sandwiches for breakfast - that's the sign of a civilised country!

In Chora, on Folegrandos, there is a little shop selling amazing Italian ice cream that even I (accustomed to Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Dazs) could love. Wish I could remember the exact location, but the walled capital is so tiny. I don't think it had more than that one ice cream shop. Just wander through the squares (restaurants upon restaurants), to the outskirts of the city, but still within the wall, and you will find it!

The two that really stand out were one in Florence, Italy (not sure of the steet but it was just a couple of streets north and east of the Duomo)...they had a bunch of gourmet flavours that you wouldn't find anywhere else in Italy. Best of all was the cheesecake flavour!! The second was Jauja in Bariloche, Argentina - this place was SERIOUSLY good! I went there twice a dy during my stay just totry all their flavours! All the different dulce de leche flavours in Argentina are amazing!

The best ice cream can be found in Arezzo/Italy. I think the shop's name is "Violetta", though I am not sure about this one.

Pistachio ice cream at Bekdache confectionery in the Hamidiye souk of Damascus. No wonder this place is always full!
2nd best was Elderflower ice cream at a streetside kiosk in Graz.

Damascus, in the Souq al-Hamidiyya, a place called Backdash (or Bekdach). Vanilla ice-cream (hand-made on the premises) hand rolled in pistachios. I don't care for ice cream but became addicted to this stuff while in Syria. The texture is different than what's served in North America.

The best ice cream I've ever had was in Bar Harbor, Maine. I'm not talking about the usual ridiculous lobster ice cream establishment, I'm talking about a place called Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream. Their ice cream is so fresh and their flavors are intense. Some highlights are the stout with fudge, creme de menthe, any flavors based around their coffee ice cream, blueberry basil sorbet, strawberry champagne sorbet, and orange tarragon sorbet.

Cows PEI. So delicious and the smeel of the waffle cones is enough to drag you into the store. They host some amazing flavour made with local and fine imported indgreients. It's very fattening but in the buterfatr rating it's higher than super premium. It's also all made on PEI by hand and the cones are made in the store daily. Worth the trip.
