75% of Beijing Olympic tickets unsold

Posted Monday, January 28, 2008, 1:56 PM by Lonely Planet

Thinking of heading to China for the Olympics but concerned you'll only manage to bag tickets to the synchronised swimming or handball competitions? Well never fear as a report from Xinhua News says 75% of Beijing Olympic tickets remain unsold.

A total of 1.8 million tickets to the sports events of the August 8-24 Games went on sale in December. Although the Beijing Olympics Organising Committee (BOCOG) hasn't given a reason for the glut of unsold tickets Chinese media is reporting that it might have to do with some key events popular with the Chinese population being extremely over-subscribed while the rest had fewer bookings.

I'd like to go- I've never been to Beijing or an Olympics.

I went to the Olympics site to try to buy a ticket, but being from the U.S., I'm not sure if I can. It was pretty confusing.

Every website I look at from the US shows tickets for softball (the one sport we want to watch) starting at $100 for pool play and going up to $400+ for the gold medal game. In Athens, the same tickets were going for about $10 and $40 respectively. The official Olympic website shows them as sold out. There are nine of us going to watch a family member compete. Those prices are prohibitive. Should we just wait and see???

the original post doesn't get the information right. 1.8 million was the number of tickets put out for the last lottery. Chinese public apparently preferred certain events to the others, ended up applying for the same events. Thus there was a low fulfillment rate.

However, the total number of tickets available for the Summer Olympics is much higher than 1.8 million, and it'll be put out for onsale.

People who do not live in China need to inquire their regional olympic committee as for where to get their tickets.

Do NOT trust any website promising you Olympic tickets. Many of them are not official. God know if they do have tickets to sell.

I will be in china during the olympics and from everything I read only chinese nat'ls or foreigners with a 6 month visa can purchase tickets-and the ticketing plan is super laborious and detailed and you have to actually pick up the tickets on site. So - unless I am crazy or the info is very badly displayed, I am TRYING to get tickets and cannot!

look like all tickets for Beijing Olympics are sold out. Only exceptions would be socker games that will be in other cities than Beijing.

The ticket prices are in RMB (Chinese People's Yuan). One USD is about 7 RMB.
