Seasoned adventurers and avid students of beaten paths understand these monikers arise from a mix of local lore, historical homage, cultural impetus, cartographic necessity and more.
But what about the more surprising origin stories - names shaped by unexpected forces and influences?
In our Thread of the Day spotlight we catch up with a cluster of Thorn Tree travellers chatting about how a host of locations acquired their title. From invasions to etymology, it's not where (or what) you might think! Read on here

Karni Mata Temple in Dashok, India….eeek!
Posted at 04:49AM Feb 22, 2008 by CarolB
Travel can make you open your mind, question your assumptions, challenge your prejudices, and test your expectations. Or, as in the case of this video, take your pre-conceptions, beat them up, eject from the door of a speeding car, and run over them. Unless you like rats of course, in which case - enjoy!

This young couple have somehow captured the spirit of travel with a series of films that are both inspiring and informative. Gritty Tokyo neighborhoods off the beaten track
Posted at 06:55AM Oct 17, 2007 by CarolB
"Tokyo really is, unexpectedly, a very subtle city. Its beauty is in the details. Its sometimes hard to break away from the obvious, what with the language gap and the huge size of the city, but there are plenty of surprises to be had if you are willing to do the hard slog to discover them..."
Coinlockerbaby gets our Thorn Tree Post of the Day vote for doing that hard slog and gathering up some insider tips on Tokyo's quirkier, less publicised attractions.
Read his detailed report and other community contributions here. (We thought you may also like to check out the latest photo feature on Japan below).

Video Diary - 4 day Trek to Macchu Pichu
Posted at 03:18AM Sep 10, 2007 by CarolB
Our video Staff Pick this week is by traveller Rick Farrell, who took on the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu in Peru and, other than the odd blister and soggy tent, lived to tell the tale.
Having made the journey ourselves we reckon Rick has done a great job of documenting the trials and tribulations of the walk, while injecting a dose of good ol’ English humour. Anyone who films themselves at 4:30am before launching on an all-day hike also deserves a pat on the back, if not a good lie down.
Check it out here.

Video - Snapshots of Italy
Posted at 05:47AM Aug 03, 2007 by CarolB
Our Staff Pick this week is by traveller Greer Cornish. It’s an example of how good voiceover, stills photography and some basic animation can produce a great clip, without the need for hard core video footage. Judging by your comments, it seems you agree too!
This video has been added to our LPTV Tripcast channel, dedicated to travel vodcasts, trip diaries, and the joys of life on the road, as well as our Guerilla Guide channel, where you’ll find the low-down on destinations from Lonely Planet authors and clued-in travellers.
Greer is currently in Peru and has taken a video camera with her this time. Go forth and point that camera sister! We look forward to viewing more.

Best Sense-ation Combinations
Posted at 05:38AM Aug 03, 2007 by CarolB
Our Bluelist pick comes courtesy of Jojokato, a regular Bluelist poster who recognizes that some of the best travel experiences demand your complete sensory attention.
Jojokato looks at some of the best ways to test your senses – wade through the thick jungle air and clamber a-la-Indiana Jones through Mayan ruins built as early as the 4th century BCE; satisfy your taste buds and get into line at Beard Papa, where the smell of cream puffs sends you into food wonderland; take in the fragrant hibiscus and ginger as you hike up to Manoa Falls, Hawaii, an experience akin to walking into a giant bamboo wind chime.
Check out Jojokato's "Best Sense-ation Combinations" Bluelist here.
