Australians do it longer

In our Thread of the Day, one of our Thorn Tree travellers wonders aloud how Australians and New Zealanders can hit the road for such lengths of time.
Is it cultural? Because they have more vacation time each year? Or something else entirely? And are there folks out there from another country who have the Aussies beat?
