Why volunteer?

Today on Thorn Tree, JJack poses a doozy of a question: why volunteer?
What do you think? Travellers often want more than your average 'tourist' experience, which might lead them down the road of volunteering. But as JJack points out, things can get complicated if the motivation of these volunteers is personal gratification and experience, no matter how well intentioned.
WHat doDo people give enough thought to volunteering? Is it possible to have an excess of good samaritans if they're not sure how they can help, don't neceesarily have the skills, and don't do their homework?
