Travel fools

The grand tradition of April Fools Day brought out some curious travel stories yesterday, brought to our attention by many folks in the Lonely Planet community.
First up, was the news that France was to restrict the amount of American tourists coming into the country.
Meanwhile, over in Thailand, Phuket announced a ban on alcohol sure to frustrate some travellers (not to mention the locals). The story in the Phuket Gazette is no longer live, but here's a taster:
"Asked why the ban would be imposed coinciding with the usually boisterous Songkran Festival celebrations, Vice Minister Dumwrong Raknaa said, 'Tourists don't want to see people drinking, throwing water around or having uncontrolled fun. This is as important to the development of the country as the One Tambon One Product initiative. In fact, we'd like to call this our One Village One Vice project... People who would normally while away their time and liver tissue by drinking are invited to learn about our great cultural traditions, such as fruit carving and basket weaving,' he said."
Interested in wildlife and nature travel? National Geographic (courtesy Harvard Lampoon), offered a new kind of bird watching on its cover yesterday. And in Antarctica, the penguins were exhibiting once in a lifetime behaviour!
And in news close to the heart of anyone who's ever flown economy/coach class, Candian carrier Westjet launched an innovative new sleeper option, while European low-cost carrier Ryanair started hearts fluttering with the promise of a new x-rated in-flight offering designed to please 'aerosexuals' of every persuasion.
Finally, those hanging out for an out of this world journey had their dreams realized, as Google teamed up with Richard Branson's Virgin Airlines to give us our very own chance to star trek - Project Virgle, the first permanent human colony on Mars, "one of the grandest adventures in human history".
If you catch any we missed, add them to the comments below (but keep them travel-centric!)
