Beyond the guidebook

Travel guides only go so far. You can learn alot about a place from books written about it, both by its people and outsiders looking in.
Great literature and non-fiction can be an enriching accompaniment to a journey - as a kind of cultural homework before you travel, or after the fact, to underscore your own experience and perspectives.
Here's a few recent forum threads from Thorn Tree members about books that make their travel even better: Books about Turkey, about Russia, about Japan, about Vietnam, about India, about Kenya, and the Czech Republic.
