Travelling with Kids
Posted at 12:58PM May 14, 2008 by geekgal
If the words 'family holiday' conjure memories of backseat squabbles, emergency toilet stops, bare legs sticking to sweaty vinyl car seats and the never ending chorus of "Are we there yet? Are we there, yet?", then chances are you may be reluctant to venture far and wide with your beloved off-spring in tow.

A place is as much about the sights as the characters you meet. Check out this video by Lonelyplanet.tv member Lauren (one of our favourite talented contributors) which follows a local NYC character on a Big Apple tour.

Nice camera work, insightful commentary and whiz-bang editing all help to bring your travel video to life. But sometimes the clip that captures the attention and the imagination is simply about being there and recording the moment.

Karni Mata Temple in Dashok, India….eeek!
Posted at 03:49PM Feb 22, 2008 by CarolB
Travel can make you open your mind, question your assumptions, challenge your prejudices, and test your expectations. Or, as in the case of this video, take your pre-conceptions, beat them up, eject from the door of a speeding car, and run over them. Unless you like rats of course, in which case - enjoy!

Elephant Rodeo
Posted at 03:29PM Jan 24, 2008 by CarolB
How to keep fit? How to look good on the road? How do I connect with the locals? These are the kinds of burning issues that keep the backpackers of today tossing sleeplessly in their bunk beds. Luckily help is at hand. Huge in Asia, the guys behind one of our all time favorites (The Hanoi Hustle) come to us as 'The Travel Doctors'.
Here they dole out fitness advice and then put their own recommendations to the test at an elephant rodeo. Check out the video here.
The second in the series covers fashion, Vietnam style.

How to Get Lost
Posted at 11:54AM Nov 26, 2007 by CarolB
This young couple have somehow captured the spirit of travel with a series of films that are both inspiring and informative. Not everything goes well - but they handle the set-backs with good humour and grace. The end result is a video that makes you want to drop everything, grab a backpack and set off on an extended adventure around India and South East Asia.
They’ve produced a 7 part video documentary on their adventure. This is the first in their series. How to Get Lost, Part 1 of 7 India: Varanasi, Train Travel, Darjeeling).

Hike up Hirschberg Mountain
Posted at 02:41PM Nov 25, 2007 by CarolB
We like this clip for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is nicely put together; secondly, the traveller presents very well, and thirdly; Tony has shown us what he can do with the new video gear he won by entering a competition on lonelyplanet.tv. We acquired Tony's winning clip 'Timeless Adventures in Thailand' for our permanent collection.
As you can see it really captures the travel experience - inspirational and personal - but I think you'll agree that technically-speaking, the new gear he used for his latest clip has made a real difference. Keep an eye on lonelyplanet.tv for the next competition. And keep an eye on Tony, as we may be seeing more from him.

Diving In
Posted at 06:06PM Nov 16, 2007 by CarolB
Forget the million dollar budgets - WaimeaJoe's video takes three simple ingredients: a personal story, voice-over and some beautiful footage - and turns it into an atmospheric video.
This is a great example of how you can use your footage to create a video retrospectively. Here the diver takes his video camera into the underworld, and gets some lovely shots of sea creatures, dolphins and sharks. Later, through voice over, he adds an intimate reflection on what he loves doing best - diving.

Shaolin Kung Fu
Posted at 05:28PM Nov 16, 2007 by CarolB
What happens when an Icelandic duo go on holidays to India and China? Quite a lot actually, here's one of their best clips. Don't let their size fool you - these mini Shaolin monks have all the moves.
This clip has a great mix of colour and movement - and inspires you to think about how to amp-up your next trip by taking a more hands-on approach (see their Bollywood clip for some wrestling moves). Just watch out for that axe!

Video Diary - 4 day Trek to Macchu Pichu
Posted at 01:18PM Sep 10, 2007 by CarolB
Our video Staff Pick this week is by traveller Rick Farrell, who took on the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu in Peru and, other than the odd blister and soggy tent, lived to tell the tale.
Having made the journey ourselves we reckon Rick has done a great job of documenting the trials and tribulations of the walk, while injecting a dose of good ol’ English humour. Anyone who films themselves at 4:30am before launching on an all-day hike also deserves a pat on the back, if not a good lie down.
Check it out here.
This video has been added to our Travel Tales Channel which showcases memorable travel moments.

Video - Snapshots of Italy
Posted at 03:47PM Aug 03, 2007 by CarolB
Our Staff Pick this week is by traveller Greer Cornish. It’s an example of how good voiceover, stills photography and some basic animation can produce a great clip, without the need for hard core video footage. Judging by your comments, it seems you agree too!
This video has been added to our LPTV Tripcast channel, dedicated to travel vodcasts, trip diaries, and the joys of life on the road, as well as our Guerilla Guide channel, where you’ll find the low-down on destinations from Lonely Planet authors and clued-in travellers.
Greer is currently in Peru and has taken a video camera with her this time. Go forth and point that camera sister! We look forward to viewing more.
