Stuck in North America’s snow? Download our apps for free.

Jane NethercoteLonely Planet author

With snow and freezing conditions – aka ‘snowmageddon’ – stranding people in the US and Canada, Lonely Planet has made 13 of its US & Canada iPhone City Guides free to travelers. That way, even if the snow has trapped you, you can at least explore the city you’re in – or use the guide to get practical info on the ground.

The 13 guides will be free in the iTunes App Store from 6pm PST on Tuesday, February 1st to 6pm PST Friday, February 4th 2011. Here are the cities available for free download:

•         San Francisco
•         New York City
•         Boston
•         Washington DC
•         Chicago
•         Seattle
•         New Orleans
•         Vancouver
•         Las Vegas
•         Miami
•         Toronto
•         Los Angeles
•         Montreal

I have been trying to grab it on my phone but it keeps saying “An unknown error has occurred.” :(

Hi midwestdiva – are you able to tell us the nature of the specific problem? I’ll try and find out what could be happening. Jane.

Apple’s iTunes terms and conditions refer to “auto-renewal” of “subscriptions.” You must accept these terms and conditions before downloading the Lonely Planet guides. It’s great that you’re offering them for free for a limited time, but can these guides auto-renew and be billed to the credit card # that the user has on file with Apple?

Thanks sanctuary2. You won’t be charged in future for the app.

This is a standard ‘re-agreement’ to Apple’s latest Terms and Conditions that they make users click ‘I Agree’ to every now and again and which, in this case, includes stuff about subscription services.

Our apps are not subscription based, and no, users downloading our free apps (or paid apps) will not incur any charges later on down the track.

@anyssen – we do have Compass guides (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/mobile/android/) and phrasebooks (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/mobile/android/phrasebooks.php) for Android. Unfortunately, they’re not included in the free offering currently.
