LP Top 16 College Football Poll — Week 6

Robert ReidLonely Planet author

Traveler of the college football weekend: Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez ran 241 yards. More than Eric Crouch, Tommie Frazier, Turner Gill — ANY Nebraska quarterback — ever ran before in a game. Now, if one yard is a mile (and let’s say it is for fun), little Taylor went on a 241-mile roadtrip — MORE than the roundtrip bus ride between Lincoln and Manhattan, Kansas, where he single-handedly upset Kansas State coach Bill Synder’s 70th-birthday party.

That’s travel.

Our pollsters Karla Zimmerman, Robert Reid and Ryan Ver Berkmoes, meanwhile, try handle how to deal with the loss of last week’s #1 Alabama — with commentary by Mr Ver Berkmoes.

1. Ohio State. Has looked more solid than former #1 ‘Bama all year.

2. Oregon. Still has possibility for heartbreak, look for late Pac 10 loss.

3. Boise State. Stop playing HS teams (Toledo et al) if you want respect.

4. TCU. Tough, but Wyoming was no match.

5. Nebraska. Should get points off for Big 12 betrayal.

6. Oklahoma. Still basking in spanking to Texas.

7. Auburn. No KY gel.

8. LSU. Points added for comical luck.

9. Alabama. Last week’s Arkansas game foreshadowed South Carolina triumph.

10. South Carolina. Can Spurrier return to the top ranks?

11. Utah. Loses points for locale/lack of trad?

12. Michigan State. Been under-valued all year despite huge heart.

13. Arkansas. First to expose ‘Bama.

14. Stanford. Points for Harbaugh’s continuing excellence.

15. Nevada. [They have a team? Oh yeah, undefeated too. --Ed.]

16. Wisconsin. Gophers were no test.
