I am just back from my solo backpacking trip to 2 countries. I was told I am the first Indian woman to do so.
And after reading your article, I think I have a long way to go.

Great interesting stuff.

I first hitchhiked western Europe in 1975 and 1976 with Ken Welsh' Hitchhikers' Guide to Europe which formed my oddball travel philosophy that I still carry today. Extended trips in China and India followed in later years but I miss the hitchhiking, never knowing what would happen on the road that day or where I would sleep that night. Life was simpler and more wondrous then.

I started backpacking - and hitch-hiking (which was much safer back then - in early 1971. First trip was one to Canterbury from London (and return)on a weekend when I desperately wanted to get out of the big city and had very little cash. After a wonderful trip and really zippy travel I decided that was the way I wanted to travel ... and nothing could stop me. I continued hitching (and backpacking) until about 1977 (did most of Europe, Turkey, North Africa and western Canada that way).
The backpacking continues till this day (with me 61 years of age). I'm off in a couple of weeks to walk some of the Thames Path from the river's source to as far as we can get, carrying what we need in a small backpack. We'll be staying wherever we end up each evening.

Last November I backpacked around Kerala, SW India with a friend. I'd backpacked across Nth India back in the 80s but found Kerala an even more delightful experience: I recommend it highly to anyone who has yet to discover India.

Later this year or early next I'll be returning to Egypt to backpack rather than take a (cut-price) Nile cruise like last time (dirt cheap because it was in the early 1990s when all the tourists were being killed around Luxor and no-one wanted to go for love or money). Have had a wanderlust since childhood and love the freedom backpacking gives although there are a lot more travellers (with two 'l's - squabling moderators note!) about now and it can be a bit unpleasant with tour groups added.

I tend to be a +Rough Guide+ user now but that's because I want a lot more information on culture, politics and monuments and less on the places to get pissed and party. Other than that, nothing much has changed.

long live the backpackers!!

I would like to know how travel changes us as human beings. Does our outlook towards life change? Do we become a better person???

Swapping backpacks for wheeled duffle bags? Yer goin' soft!

I'm in my (gulp!) mid-sixties and still carry my backpack. It gets harder to find those unspoilt places. but easier to plan ahead.

Easier to keep in touch with the kids at home - who have at last stopped worrying about mum going solo to all those muslim countries - but a responsibility to email home every few days at least.

But, really, I feel much more adventurous than all the young 'uns - who are almost afraid to get in a car with (heaven forbid!) 'wind-up windows'.

I'm off to do aq solo Silk Road trip from China next month - wish me luck!
