  1. Live-Aboard Life (the diving) – Aggressor III, Belize

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 2 September 2011

We think SCUBA diving under practically any conditions is great. Then we got on our very first live-aboard dive boat with The Aggressor Fleet in Belize and learned that on a live-aboard conditions are always perfect. Yeah, the Aggressor III and staff spoiled us. Here’s how. 11 reasons live-aboards rule 1. No elbowing the diver next to you. The Aggressor III has a very roomy dive deck with plenty of space to stow and dry your gear and ample room for suiting up (hey, it requires plenty of room to get into and out of a wet suit). 2. No freaking out about basic gear.

  2. Live-Aboard Life (topside)- Aggressor III, Belize

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 31 August 2011

We love SCUBA diving and we’ve managed to do a lot of it, racking up almost 400 dives between the two of us in some of the best dive destinations in the world including bucket list toppers like Palau and Sipidan. Yes, we’re lucky. And, yet, we still have SCUBA dreams. Specifically, we dream about getting on a live-aboard dive boat–a dream we finally fulfilled in Belize.

  3. La Isla Bonita – Ambergris Caye

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 7 June 2011

We decided to head over to Ambergris Caye as despite finding Caye Caulker absolutely charming we wanted to find a little more beach and see the other island. That night we headed to Capricorn which is a wonderful beach-side restaurant on the north shore with amazing food. It is a great way to try some [...]

  4. Caye Caulker – Part 2, Manatees and a Rescue Mission!

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 29 May 2011

The next morning, not particularly wanting to get back on a speed boat but desperate to see manatees, we headed to the EZ Boys tour office and booked two seats on their manatee tour. We popped over the road to get some waffles for breakfast and we set off. We had been trying to see [...]

  5. Caye Caulker – Part 1, The Blue Hole Dive

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 27 May 2011

As you step off the ferry onto Caye Caulker you are greeted with a sign which tells you to “Go Slow”, and that is happily the ethos that this island follows. We arrived around midday and were greeted at the pier by lots of very dinky golf-cart taxis (there are no cars on the island), [...]

  6. Shhhhh! Belize’s Biggest SCUBA Secret – Turneffe Atoll, Belize

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 12 July 2010

You want the beauty and peace of a deserted island (but with the comfort of good food, good company and even A/C)? Welcome to Turneffe Atoll. About 30 miles (90 minutes by boat) out in the open ocean  east of Belize City, 300 square mile Turneffe Atoll is the largest of only four coral atolls in the entire Western Hemisphere. The second largest reef in the world passes right by, often within a stone’s throw of the shoreline. The isolation, lack of any large scale development and the natural attributes of the atoll make it the most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Caribbean.

  7. Sky, Sand, Sea, Sun, Sharks – Ambergris Caye, Belize

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 8 July 2010

In this era of increasingly painful airline travel we have been very grateful that we’re on a road trip.  However, there are times when flying is the best option. Luckily, flying to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye in Belize via Tropic Air was a delight. Unlike what has become typically air travel, our flight was low key, easy, efficient, comfortable and scenic. We arrived at the municipal airport in Belize City about 10 minutes before our flight was scheduled to leave.

  9. Filosofy in the Flats – Turneffe Atoll, Belize

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 23 April 2010

We were eating breakfast at Turneffe Flats Lodge this morning with other guests fueling up for a day filled with adventures like fly fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon or SCUBA diving some of the most colorful and life-filled sites in the world. Here on one of the largest and most diverse collections of islands (cayes), atolls and mangroves in the world, the day is never dull. A fisherman at our table was wearing a perfectly worn in, perfectly comfortable, perfectly cool Turneffe Flats baseball cap.

  10. Ambergris Caye – Amazing Snorkeling

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 10 November 2009

The trouble is, I don’t scuba dive.  Belize has the second largest coral reef in the world, and people come from far and wide to dive into it and apparently it’s absolutely incredible – but I don’t dive.  Partly that’s financial, but it’s also partly about the potential death factor.  That Nick Hornby book about [...]

  11. One last Belizean adventure

Blog: A Travel Diary from Mexico, Central and South America - 7 November 2009

Unsure of whether or not to push on back into Guatemala, we convinced ourselves that there was probably one more thing not to miss in Belize - and that's the second largest coral reef in the world! And perhaps we shouldn't miss Belize City either. After all, it is not possible to know Belize without seeing it's largest city, according to our book. Besides, to get to the reef you must take a boat from Belize City to one of the cayes, so two birds with one stone, we went to Ambergris Caye.
