Belizean restaurants in Belize

  1. A

    Caladium Restaurant

Just across the street from the bus station, the Caladium is one of Belmopan's longest-standing family businesses. It offers a dependable menu of Belizean favorites, such as fried fish and coconut rice, conch soup and barbecue chicken.

  2. B

    Nerie's II Restaurant

Nerie's offers most accompaniments imaginable to rice and beans, including curried lamb, stewed cow foot, lobster, gibnut and deer. You can start things off with a choice of soups, including chicken, escabeche (with chicken, lime and onions), chirmole (with chicken and a chilli-chocolate sauce) or cow foot, and round it off with cassava pudding. Nerie's has another outlet – Nerie's I Restaurant – on the north side.

  3. C

    Glenda's Café

Glenda's serves traditional Belizean food in a clapboard house on the island's west side. It has the best cheap breakfasts in town, from cinnamon rolls and orange juice to full breakfasts of bacon or ham, eggs, bread and coffee. Burritos, tacos, sandwiches and chicken with rice and beans are offered for lunch. Get there early for breakfast.

  5. E

    King Burger

Reliably fresh breakfasts of eggs, beans and fry-jacks for BZ$6.50, as well as hamburgers and plates of fried shrimp. Coffee is instant, but juices are fresh.

  6. F

    The Galley

This unpretentious restaurant located on the far side of the sports field offers simple, good Belizean fare like shrimp, chicken, conch and lobster (in season). For dessert, try a slice of the ultra-rich and slightly boozy black fruit cake.

  7. G

    Radi's Fine Food

What you see is what you get: a shack, a porch, a kitchen and three daily specials cooked by Creole chef Radiance, aka Radi. Shrimp dishes are a given, and the other two dishes can be anything from conch soup to meatloaf to lasagna. All are delicious, and portions are always more than ample. Check the board on the side of the road for the day's specials.

  8. H

    Dawn's Grill n Go

Good things come in small packages, and good food comes from a small kitchen at Dawn's Grill n Go. Chicken, fish ball snapper and other dishes are usually on order at Dawn's, where you'll also find excellent desserts (try the Baileys cheesecake or bread pudding with rum sauce, made from scratch right there). Dawn also makes her own amazing hot sauce from scratch.

  9. Corozal Bay Inn

The restaurant at this southside resort offers a wide variety of Belizean specialties, but the real reason to come is the picturesque seaside (and poolside) setting. Sit outside to enjoy sea breezes, or find a table indoors under the thatch palapa. Either way, you'll enjoy a tasty meal and fine, friendly service.

  10. I

    Elvi's Kitchen

This San Pedro institution has been around since the early days, serving up local specialties such as shrimp creole, fried chicken and conch ceviche. The funky tropical decor, loud marimba music and expensive T-shirts for sale (not to mention the overpriced main courses) give it a Disney-like atmosphere. But it's a good place to sample some authentic and filling local cuisine.

  12. J

    El Patio Restaurant & Grill

Potted plants, a flowing fountain and a candlelit interior make this sand-floored palapa an inviting setting for a romantic dinner. Grilled meats and seafood are the specialty, accompanied by fresh-squeezed, thirst-quenching fruit juices or ice cold Belikin beers.

  13. K

    Caramba! Restaurant

Caramba is a busy place due to its excellent food, fun atmosphere and attentive service. Mexican and Creole dishes focus on fresh fish and seafood cooked in at least 10 tasty ways. The tropical decor (including the staff's festive attire) enhances your seafood feast.

  14. L

    RD's Diner

Rick and his staff go above and beyond to ensure a good time at this innocuous-looking eatery. The interior might be nondescript but it's an excellent place to sample some local specialties like gibnut stew or rice and beans. Otherwise the menu offers a mix of Belizean, Mexican and straight-up continental fare such as burgers, salads and fried seafood. Service is a bit slow but exceedingly friendly.

  15. M

    Patty's Bistro

A Corozal favorite, Patty's is the kind of place where they seem to know everyone who walks in the door. The yellow walls are hung with hokey beach art, and the tables are covered in plastic tablecloths, but the atmosphere is so welcoming that the informal decor only adds to the charm. The place is best known for its conch soup (BZ$12), a thick potato-based chowder with vegetables, rice and chunks of conch meat. But you'll find more Mexican and Belizean fare on the menu, not to mention burgers, sandwiches and other standards.
