    Border towns suck. While clearly there are gleaming examples indicting the opposite, in general, in my observations of nearly 2 decades on the road and 100+ countries later, border towns suck. So recently while crossing from the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, i was expecting much of the Belizean town just across the border.

  2. We’re Belize-ing It – Corozal, Belize

    Crossing borders is always an exercise in change. That’s why we do it. What struck us most when we crossed over the border from Mexico into Belize was the heat. You may say heat knows no borders but trust us when we tell you that it was instantly hotter on the Belize side. Oh, and the fact that we were FINALLY dipping a toe in Central America after more than three years on the road in North America… Things were also instantly in English.

  3. Breezing over the Border – Belize, Central America

    After 1,198 days on the road (that’s 3.3 years) and 114,270 miles (that’s a hell of a lot) in North America (the US, Canada and Mexico) the Trans-Americas Journey has finally made it to Central America! After a marathon drive from Cancun to Chetumal in Mexico’s Yucatan we crossed the border into Belize near Corozal. As if to welcome us, one of the first signs we saw on the Belize side made it official: we are now in Central America.

    Christmas Night, and I am operating on fumes. Last night was Christmas Eve, and the center of the town's festivities was the house of the Mayor's brother, which also happens to be next door to my hotel. Here's how folks on Corozal celebrate the night before Christmas: Explosives. They began rocking my hotel a minute or so before midnight. Quarter-sticks of dynamite, sporadic gunfire, whizzing Mexican bottle rockets.

    The Thunderbolt from Corozal to San Pedro is a good deal @ US$25, but at US$40 Maya Air's 20 minute flight is a better deal for the time constrained and speedboat averse.
