Il Vecchio Mulino
During Sunday lunch, this cosy restaurant feels like a communal dining room for the entire neighbourhood. But any time of the week it’s a highly recommended option for authentic Italian pastas, meat and fish dishes, finished off with desserts such as chocolate tortes (platters are brought around to the tables for you to choose). Kids are warmly welcomed.

Marco Polo
This rustic slow-food restaurant looks like it’s been lifted out of Piedmont’s vine-ribboned hills. Peer from the communal wooden tables in the beamed dining room to the open kitchen to watch the chefs prepare market-fresh Italian classics (chalked daily on the blackboard menu).

Enoteca
The decor is plush - dark and heavy with black marble tables, cushioned brown chairs and wood-panelled walls - but the Italian food is light. You can view it being created in the open, white-tiled kitchen. The food is so good that reservations are recommended.

Pasta
Soaring squid-ink-coloured walls and gleaming dark timber furniture create an ambient setting for classy pastas and meat and fish dishes. The bountiful portions give Pasta one of the best price to quality ratios in the historic centre.

Rossi
Ten tables, no décor, sacks of onions waiting to be put away and garlic wafting from the kitchen. This little Italian eatery is hugely popular, great value and as authentic as they come. The gent who runs it is a gem.

Rosticeria Fiorentina
One of a handful of restaurants on this street catering squarely to Eurocrats. Hearty dishes served on paper tablecloths in family-style surroundings with Italian meals made by Mama.

Rugantino
Little slice of Italy on one of the capital's busiest boulevards. Simple menu, great food and loud voices emanating from the kitchen.
