Calling all dragon slayers. Once a year Mons (Bergen in Dutch) riotously comes to life during the Lumeçon, which reaches its boisterous culmination on one of Wallonia’s finest Grand Places. At other times, despite an interesting scattering of minor attractions and an enticing skyline of medieval hilltop spires, Mons has struggled to entice serious numbers of tourists. All this is set to change in 2015 when it becomes a European City of Culture. Many museums are currently closed for pre-2015 rebuilds, but when open, most are free on the first Sunday of each month.
