Lonely Planet review
The classy new hotel uses a well chosen touch of semi-minimalist modernism to bring fresh life to this proud 1804 building. Entering through a historic carriageway, the hushed subtlety is such that you can easily miss the reception and wander instead into the suave La Folie bar.
An old wooden staircase sweeps round from the reception desk to a fashionably grey walled 1st-floor landing that maintains its Corinthian columns and a statue niche. Beyond are the executive rooms, again elegantly combining modernism with grey marble fireplaces and original ceiling mouldings. Bathrooms are set behind craftily disguised bed-panel walls though this does result in the rooms losing some of their former expansiveness. Standard rooms come in a variety of sizes and types including some with steam shower and others with three-angle bath. All have high-quality mattresses, fine white linens and pale walls in trendy off-white colour schemes. The breakfast room has a fine old chimney breast and is partly floored in heavy old wooden boards. Herringbone brickwork continues into the foyer area.
