Lonely Planet review

Facing the vaulted collonade of lace-shops that makes up the belfry's rear end, Martin's is about as central as you can get. Despite nods to traditional Flemish brickwork, this 150-room building remains something of an architectural scar amid all the old facades of the historic centre.

Although a thorough renovation has added a superb freshness to the stylish modern decor of the public areas. Trendy minimalism reigns in the swish new foyer with red stool-sofas and little maroon chairs on pale straw-coloured floors. Rooms fall into three categories somewhat immodestly labelled 'Cosy', 'Charming' and 'Great'. All are comfortable though the greys and browns make for a somewhat gloomy feel. Red and white bathrooms are much brighter. Room types are are stylistically similar to one another, though 'Cosy' rooms have showers rather than bathtubs. Breakfast is included in the trendily remodelled patio restaurant.
