This protected building dates from 1556 and has a magnificently peaceful canalside location near the 14th-century Augustine bridge.
The vaulted hallway creates the impression of entering a small castle. The reception area is more modern but still has bundles of character with bare-board and marble floors. Beyond the bank of extravagantly tasselled room keys is a powerful Winter in Medieval Bruges canvas. Similar paintings grace the rest of the hotel. The unrenovated section is comfortable enough though the ageing fabric wallpaper has a slightly dowdy, dated air. The renovated rooms are more appealing: those in the lowest section have rug-draped brick floors, vaulted ceilings and pillars built into the walls. A forgotten sitting area lurks atmospherically beside the downstairs beauty salon with an antique wooden throne-seat and old fireplace with curious dangling saw. Some tables in the breakfast room look across the canal.
