Lonely Planet review
Two of the most imposing town houses on Hoogstraat, one of which is the former home of Baron de Peellaert. Both have been meticulously restored to create this comfortable and opulent new 50-room palace-hotel.
Despite the new appearance of the corridors and the surfeit of faux marble columns, the first-floor rooms have listed monument status. Some deluxe rooms have vast antique wardrobes over two metres tall, which are quite fitting with the soaring ceilings. Standard rooms have only a slight heritage feel and are fundamentally comfy modern creations. On the third floor there's the curiosity of beams (also legally protected) that are so low they force guests to duck to access their rooms. The ground floor sports a sumptuous lounge area with gilt mirrors, chandeliers and oil paintings. Attached is a high-ceilinged bar decorated with black-and-white film-star prints. Behind, a dining area starts with an unusual wooden-topped chimney breast. Steps lead down theatrically into the main breakfast room whose colourful modernity is a slightly startling contrast to the opulence of the main hallways.
