Lonely Planet review

Die Swaene occupies two lavishly (over)decorated separate buildings. They face each other across one of the most sought-after sections of Bruges's canal. Hold tight for sensory overload.

The visual feast starts in the main building reception area. Gilt angels, cherubs and statues holding lamps seem to run the colourful show. The bar has wooden panelling, mirrors, photo portraits and religious icons. Some find it cosy. Others feel that it's horror-movie bizarre. Each guest room is individually decorated in styles that vary fairly wildly. A rococo fantasy of velvets and sash drapes perhaps? Maybe oriental cabinets? Black and silver decor? Louis XVI furniture (some with chipped veneer) and flatscreen TVs are equally probable. It's a lucky dip. It's lots of fun as long as the very elevated room charge isn't a stumbling block. Probably the best-located rooms are those in the Pergola building across the canal as their windows are directly over the water.
